Like the launch of Gmail and, in a way, the start of Facebook, Net-a-Porter’s new social network will launch today to a select group of people by invitation only. Joining the Netbook will, however, eventually be publicly accessible.
If you’re lucky enough to be invited by the outreach team during the next few weeks — and even if you’re not — the app sounds pretty cool. Just for iPhone and iPad at the moment (Android will probably come later), the Netbook should prove to be a fun option for browsing new looks, digitally admiring your friends’ style, and sharing your own picks from Net-a-Porter. Of course, if you’re on a budget, you’ll be doing more sharing than shopping, but maybe Forever 21 will launch an equivalent network one of these days.
The idea was to combine Net-a-Porter Live, the feed that shows you what the site’s global customers are buying at any given time, with a more traditional social network for users to connect one-to-one. While Net-a-Porter operates a separate app focused solely on e-commerce, the new one will be shoppable, too. Now you just have to wait for an invitation (you can also download the app and be added to a waitlist).
That said, the invite process isn’t rigorously controlled. Besides extending the offer to prominent stylists, models, editors, and other influencers, Net-a-Porter’s team will be giving out download codes to stylish peeps they meet at the rest of the Spring/Summer 2014 Fashion Week shows and parties. All the more reason to don a good outfit, get to London, Milan, and/or Paris, and crash!
