With Malkovich on Board, Italy Brings Unlikely Fashion Collaborations

Remember, one-off fashion collaborations aren’t just for starlets — but when they come from the male end of the celebrity spectrum, the sources, at least currently, are still unexpected.  This week, two different match-ups were announced, neither of which seems particularly obvious.

Gucci designed a Fiat; now Fiat’s heir is designing for Gucci.

First, Lapo Elkann, Fiat heir, occasional scandal topic, and all-around fashionable Italian, is renewing his Gucci affiliation. The luxury label helped create a Fiat 500 model two years ago; now Elkann is returning the favor with a capsule collection he’s designing for the brand.  The clothing, which will all be made to measure, will only be available at Gucci flagships in Milan, Paris, London, New York, and São Paulo.  Given Elkann’s perennial presence on The Sartorialist, the tailoring should probably be particular, exquisite, and go well with a pocket square.

John Malkovich models his own brand, Technobohemian.

In a slightly more curious collaboration, John Malkovich is working with the Italian online retail giant Yoox.   Malkovich, who already has his own men’s line, Technobohemian (we had no idea, did you?) will be launching a summer capsule collection available exclusively via Yoox starting tomorrow.  The high-end line will all be made in Italy.

So, which would you rather see men wearing — tailored Gucci by Lapo Elkann or finely made Bermuda shorts by John Malkovich?  Either way, Italian fashion companies are leading the way to source unusual — but very appealing! — guest designers.
