She’s got the wavy brown locks and patrician features that are practically native to Ralph Lauren models, but Robyn Lawley is also a U.S. size 12. Nevertheless, the Australian model (who’s also six-feet-two) was cast in the brand’s fall campaign. The move is most definitely a first for the label.
Given that the company has caught flak in the past for extreme uses of Photoshop, hiring Lawley is an even bigger than normal (no pun intended) step forward for Ralph Lauren. Maybe they heard the news that models who more accurately reflect the look of their audience actually improve magazine sales, or that, following demand, there are actually standalone high-fashion modeling agencies for plus-sized girls now.
No matter the impetus, it’s great to see Lawley, who’s previously landed covers for French Elle and Vogue Italia, become a face for a major international retailer. Even better, we love that she’s being featured solo as opposed to appearing as one pretty face among several in a group shot. Now, someone go tell those other brands who won’t send bigger sample sizes to the new crop of plus-sized fashion mags.
