If Banana Republic can create an entire line of clothing based on Mad Men, why shouldn’t super high-end watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre create a relevant timepiece? After all, the show’s John Hamm sports the brand, in character as Don Draper.
So just in time for last night’s Mad Men season premiere, Jaeger-LeCoultre is launching the Grande Reverso Ultra-Thin Tribute to Mad Men watch (price upon request — surprise, surprise). The Reverso is known for its flippable watch face — turn over the special Mad Men edition to find the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce logo embossed on the back. (SCDP is the show’s fictional ad agency.) To further plunge one into the show’s 60s world, the watch comes with a letter from the character Roger Sterling — Don Draper’s boss — and his book, Sterling’s Gold. To get us back to reality, the volume is signed by Matthew Weiner, the show’s creator, executive producer, and an actual person.
It’s a pricey piece of memorabilia, but legitimately swanky. It’s also awfully unusual — after all, how often do you hear about a brand founded in 1833 taking inspiration from a contemporary television show? Given the opportunity, would you sport the watch? We may not be Mad Men obsessives, but we’d put that aside to tell time on this particular iteration of the Reverso.
