The U.S. flash sale leader Gilt Groupe announced today that it is introducing shipping to over 90 countries for its men’s, women’s children’s, home, and gifts divisions. To introduce the new feature, international shipping will be free for a limited time, after which it’ll cost $19.95. The move exponentially expands the company’s audience, of course, while also enhancing Gilt’s luxury image — after all, by adding 90 countries to its shipping roster, the business is following in the footsteps of globally-accessible, online luxury retailers like Barneys New York and Net-A-Porter.
Earlier this fall, Gilt Groupe re-launched an expanded, standalone version of Gilt Home. Shortly after, the company’s upscale daily deals site, Gilt City, purchased and incorporated the floundering, fellow coupon site BuyWithMe. Next month, Gilt’s full retail menswear site, Park & Bond, will also offer the 90-country shipping policy.
After speculation about the ability of Gilt (and the rest of the flash sale field) to survive, is the company showing everyone just what kind of horizontal expansion is required to stay afloat? While we’ll be watching with interest to see the numbers that result from all these initiatives, we’re just sorry Gilt Taste won’t be getting in on the international shipping. After all, they’re selling complete Thanksgiving ingredients right down to the turkey — it’d be a perfect means for homesick expats to easily re-create the holiday outside the country.
