At a conference in San Francisco yesterday, Deb Liu, the head of Facebook Commerce Product Marketing, announced that the social media juggernaut will soon begin to test a social shopping feature named “Buy With Friends.”
Forbes reports that Buy With Friends will “allow users to share purchases in their Facebook update stream.” There’s also a discount angle: “one user [can] ‘unlock’ a deal and then share that same deal or discount with friends who can take advantage of the fact that it’s already been unlocked.”
Right now, group buying is limited to Facebook gaming apps, and the only currency that can be used is virtual (pictured). But Buy With Friends is a clear sign that the web giant is interested in the social shopping market. It’s only a matter of time until Facebook expands their reach to actual goods and services.
