As we blogged about in October, private sale site Gilt Groupe is undergoing some serious expansion. The company has transitioned from a focus on designer men’s and women’s clothing and accessories into a diverse marketplace selling kid’s clothes and toys, food, travel packages, tickets to events and now…cars.
Gilt members were alerted this morning to today’s sales, which included clothes from Geren Ford and Hanii Y, Maura Peters candles, Angela Adams rugs and bedding and 2011 Volkswagen Jettas. The cars, which typically retail for $15,995, were available on Gilt for $5,995. Needless to say, the site’s inventory is already sold out.
The sale was a promotional push by Volkswagen to market its new car; according to Gilt, all proceeds from the event “will be donated to Dress for Success Worldwide, an international non-profit that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women.”
It was recently reported that Gilt has just raised “at least $15 million in debt financing” to help them cope with their growing pains and increased customer demand. At this point, it seems like the company is ready to experiment will all sorts of sales–and may lose a bit of its luxury reputation in the process.
