Multiple sources are buzzing that Google is seriously interested in purchasing local deals site Groupon, and that the technology company has put an offer of a whalloping $6 billion dollars on the table.
As the New York Times reported yesterday, “A deal, in the $5 billion to $6 billion range, could be struck as soon as this week, [insiders] said, cautioning that the talks still could fall apart.” No one from Google or Groupon has made an official statement on the matter.
In the meantime, Yahoo! is trying to forge ahead in the local deals market with Yahoo Local Deals, an aggregation service that CEO Carol Bartz envisions as, “one of the largest and most comprehensive repositories of local offers on the Internet.” That news comes after rumors that Yahoo! had also bid (unsuccessfully) to acquire Groupon.
